BRICS Moves to Deepen AI, Trade and Economic Cooperation as Global South Gains Influence

China Proposes New BRICS AI Initiative

One of the major announcements involved artificial intelligence.

China plans to establish a BRICS AI Open Source Zone, designed to encourage cooperation and technological development among member countries.

Artificial intelligence has increasingly become a strategic economic sector. Countries are competing to develop computing infrastructure, AI models, semiconductor technology and digital services that could shape future economic growth.

For developing economies, cooperation in AI could provide opportunities to improve access to technology and reduce dependence on a small number of major technology providers.

Trade Cooperation Also Takes Center Stage

BRICS is also looking to strengthen trade links between member countries.

China announced plans to host a BRICS Service Trade Forum, with the broader objective of increasing cooperation in services and economic activities.

Services have become an increasingly important part of international trade, covering areas such as technology, finance, transportation, telecommunications, education and professional services.

Greater cooperation could potentially create new opportunities for companies in developing economies to enter markets outside their traditional trading partners.

Indonesia Becomes Part of the Expanded BRICS

Indonesia is among the countries that have joined the expanded BRICS grouping.

The bloc now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

Indonesia's participation gives the country a stronger position in discussions involving emerging economies and the Global South.
